Winter has come with a gusty breeze and a heavy snow
When the vernal pool froze, where did the amphibians go?
Salamanders went to chipmunk burrows deep underground
They rest where freezing temperatures can’t reach that far down
Woods frogs under the leaves can do the most amazing thing
Their bodies freeze solid while they are hibernating
Amphibians are far away in the forest and wait
For spring’s first warm rainy night to awaken and migrate
