Adult Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) tend to exit the pool at night heading in the same directions from which they came, though we are not sure how often they return to the exact burrow they spent the winter (like Mac) or how often they look for a new burrow (like Andy). We do know they travel long distances after leaving the pool, sometimes as much as 800 feet – which seems like a lot for a 6-inch-long animal.
